As global energy demands rise and environmental pressures intensify, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has emerged as a critical technology for converting coal, natural gas, and other resources into cleaner fuels. However, traditional low-temperature FTS faces limitations in hydrocarbon selectivity, prompting the development of high-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (HT-FTS) to enhance olefin production—particularly light olefins used in polymer manufacturing.

While HT-FTS offers advantages such as faster reaction rates and improved olefin selectivity, it also introduces significant challenges. Catalyst stability, carbon deposition, and reactor design complexities remain key hurdles to commercialization. The higher operating temperatures accelerate catalyst deactivation, underscoring the need for robust catalysts with high activity, selectivity, and longevity.

Reactor optimization is equally critical. Effective temperature control and precise management of product distributions are essential to maximize HT-FTS efficiency. Innovations in reaction engineering, such as advanced cooling systems and tailored reactor configurations, could mitigate these challenges.

Future research should prioritize three areas: novel catalyst development to resist deactivation, refined reaction engineering to improve process control, and integrated system designs to enhance overall efficiency. Overcoming these barriers will determine whether HT-FTS can fulfill its potential as a scalable solution for sustainable fuel and chemical production.
